DE BEERS LAUNCHES SHINING LIGHT AWARDS 2016-2017

‘Protecting Nature’s Beauty’ theme for this year’s awards

The De Beers Group of Companies today launched the 2016-17 Shining Light Awards: A De Beers Young Diamond Jewellery Design Awards in Windhoek, Namibia.

This year’s theme, ‘Protecting Nature’s Beauty’, is a poignant reminder of the need to take care of the world’s finite natural resources, including diamonds. Open to all aspiring Jewellery design students across Botswana, Namibia and South Africa, finalists receive valuable business development skills in the areas of Jewellery design, manufacturing, sales and marketing.

Paul Rowley, Executive Vice President, and De Beers Global Sightholder Sales, said: “We are privileged to play an important part in turning the dreams of students from our producer countries into a lasting reality, especially in this instance where we are empowering them to add value to a natural resource.”

Brent Eiseb, Senior Manager, Sales and Marketing, Namibia Diamond Trading Company, said: “As host country, Namibia has been involved in the Shining Light Awards since 2008 and is looking forward to hosting the awards this year and into 2017.

 

“The awards are also perfectly positioned to support the Prosperity Plan’s pillars on improving vocational training, as well as youth development and skills development, recently announced by the Namibian Government.”

Pat Dambe, Vice President, Corporate Affairs and Government Relations, De Beers Global Sightholder Sales, said: “The awards have grown and developed significantly over the past 20 years, with previous winners having had the opportunity to spend time in Milan at one of De Beers’ design centres and work with the finest trade artisans in the world.”

The Shining Light Awards really challenge students to translate a brief, form an idea, and transform it into a jewellery collection, with a Forevermark diamond at its heart.”

In past years, the competition has been widely regarded as a gateway for young designers to gain access to the global diamond jewellery market. Last year’s brief moved young designers away from the more elaborate diamond pieces created in the past to commercially-viable pieces.

De Beers continues to contribute towards skills development for the youth and opening opportunities within the diamond value chain. In the last two weeks, De Beers Sightholder Sales South Africa announced a R6 million enterprise development project for diamond beneficiators. In Botswana, Barclays Bank announced a US$125 million credit guarantee agreement with the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) for the diamond and manufacturing industry.

Enties are now open for the 2016-2017 Shining Light Awards!

It’s time to show the world the wealth of design talent that exists in Southern Africa by creating a design platform, through which the creative artistry can be showcased using nature’s most remarkable and finest creation: the Forevermark diamond. Shining Light Awards unites this heritage to create an internationally appealing and unique collection of diamond jewellery.

Entrants are required to be students currently enrolled in a Jewellery design and manufacturing programme or equivalent and those who graduated in these programme no later than December 2014. Entries will only be accepted from citizens of SOUTH AFRICA, BOTSWANA, and NAMIBIA.

THE DESIGN BRIEF:

  1. The designer must be Inspired by the theme of  “Protecting Nature’s Beauty - Limited Edition”
     
  2. The design should be the inspiration for a diffusion line collection consisting of:
    1. Click here to download: “How to translate a creative brief into a diamond jewellery collection”.

      One solitaire ring (with or without pavé on shank)
    2. One set of earrings (with or without pavé)
    3. One pendant  (with or without pavé)
    4. One bracelet or bangle (not both -
      with or without pavé)
    5. Name of the collection with a brief description
       (less than 150 words)
  3. FINAL SUBMISSION DATE: 17h00, 25th November 2016
